October is about Costumes, Candy, and Fair Trade?

The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing color, and the country is bundling up for winter. Houses are decorated with pumpkins and scare crows while children are dreaming of filled candy bags. October is not just a celebration of tricks, treats, and Fall leaves, it is Fair Trade month. But, what exactly is fair trade and what does it mean to you?

Fair trade is an organized social movement that uses a market-based approach to help marginalized producers and workers in developing countries create sustainability in their community. A minimum wage is set for producers that support the costs of sustainable production and living. In addition to protecting the individual farmer the environment and community are also taken into consideration. The producer must agree to environmental protection by minimizing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Another benefit is the social premium, a set amount of money that is given to help strengthen the community by building health care centers, schools, and new housing.

Fairtrademonth.org is promoting fair trade with their 31 days, 31 ways campaign. Each day the site gives an example of how you can learn a new action to support fair trade. The suggestions include asking your school or work place to serve fair trade food, educating your friends and family about what fair trade is, and participating in buying only fair trade products. The site also highlights sponsors and organizations that support the cause as well as give little unknown facts about fair trade. Did you know that the House of Representatives only drink fair trade coffee?
Fair trade promotes sustainability of the community and people and it is reducing our carbon footprint by encouraging greener ways of farming and living. That is better for the environment and healthier for our bodies. If you are interested in learning more about the impact or curious about fair trade products visit fairtrademonth.org for more information.
