HydroPoint Subscribers Reduce Water Use and Energy Demand

HydroPoint Data Systems, Inc., provider of the WeatherTRAK® Smart Water Management solution reveals that its subscribers reduce peak water and energy demand by eliminating outdoor water waste. During the summer months, water and energy consumption typically skyrocket as commercial and residential users react to higher temperatures by applying more water to landscapes and powering up cooling systems.

Water and energy are intrinsically related; energy is needed to transport and deliver water, while generating power requires massive quantities of water. The U.S. EPA links water and energy savings, equating 1 gallon of water to approximately 4 watt hours of power.

Nearly 20 percent of California’s electricity consumption is attributable to water-related energy use, according to the California Energy Commission. In the interest of national security, the Department of Energy launched the Water-Energy Nexus program to encourage the development and use of clean technologies that reduce water-related energy demand.

Thirty-six of the 50 U.S. states face water shortages within four years.
Since more than 60 percent of urban water is used for landscape irrigation and 30-to-300 percent of that water is wasted due to inefficient irrigation technology, WeatherTRAK smart irrigation controllers present a highly effective means of preventing both water and energy waste.

HydroPoint estimates that if one in every four U.S. businesses followed the example of Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS), Wal-Mart (NASDAQ: WMT) and other leading companies by implementing the WeatherTRAK® Smart Water Management solution  the nation’s annual natural resource savings would equal 56 trillion gallons of water, 225 million kilowatt hours of power and 302 million pounds of avoided CO2 emissions.

“Water is one of the earth’s most precious resources, essential for our bodies and our crops and embedded in nearly every manufacturing and energy production process. Thankfully, more and more corporate and civic leaders appreciate its true value,” said Sharon Thompson, vice president of marketing for HydroPoint. “These leaders recognize that Smart Water Management delivers a green multiplier effect – saving water and energy and reducing carbon emissions all while dramatically decreasing water and operating costs.”
