RI Supreme Court Upholds Block Island Wind Farm Power Contract
July 1, 2011 - A Rhode Island Supreme Court ruling today paves the way for Deepwater Wind to advance the permitting and development of its planned Block Island Wind Farm, which remains on track to be the first offshore wind farm in the nation.
The Supreme Court upheld Deepwater Wind’s power purchase agreement with National Grid for the renewable energy generated from the planned Block Island Wind Farm. The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission had approved the power purchase contract in August 2010.

Department of Energy Announces $120 Million to Support Development of Innovative Manufacturing Processes
June, 24, 2011 - Washington, D.C. - Today, President Obama launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, including an investment of up to $120 million from the Department of Energy over three years to develop transformational manufacturing technologies and innovative materials that could enable industrial facilities to dramatically increase their energy efficiency.The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership is a national effort bringing together industry, universities and the federal government to invest in emerging technologies that will create high quality manufacturing jobs and enhance our global competitiveness. This clean energy investment in new energy-efficient manufacturing processes and novel materials will help U.S. manufacturers save money by reducing the energy needed to power their facilities. President Obama made the announcement this morning at an event at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Washington (June 17, 2011) – Students from Virginia Tech University learned last night that their teamwork, perseverance and hard work have led to top honors when they were named the overall winners of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge after designing and building an exceptional extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) using E85 (ethanol).
Throughout the three-year competition, the Virginia Tech team hit incremental goals that helped the vehicle achieve fuel efficiency of 81.9 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent, or 70 percent over the stock vehicle, positioning them above the rest. Virginia Tech’s EREV out-performed its competitors earlier this month when it was put through a series of safety and technical tests at GM’s Proving Ground in Milford, Mich., tests similar to those conducted on GM production vehicles.

Can Energy Efficiency Help You Get a Job?
June 14, 2011 - White House Blog - Back in February, President Obama asked the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness to help lead the Better Buildings Initiative to make American businesses more competitive by saving them about $40 billion per year in energy costs. The first question the Jobs Council asked, of course, was exactly how many jobs we were talking about here?
As of today, the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst released an independent study projecting that the Better Buildings Initiative would create more than 114,000 jobs – half of which would come from a new tax credit for building energy upgrades that the President proposed to Congress in his 2012 budget. That would mean new jobs for people like contractors, sheet metal workers, engineers, and architects.

ScottishPower Renewables Becomes the First Developer in the UK to Achieve 1 GW of Capacity From Wind Power
June 16, 2011 - ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), part of the world’s largest wind power company Iberdrola*, has become the first developer in the UK to achieve one gigawatt (GW) of electricity production capacity from wind power. The milestone was achieved after the company officially opened Arecleoch (120MW) and Mark Hill (56MW) windfarms in South Ayrshire.
